Originating from Richmond, Virginia my name is Kendra Esparza-Harris. At the age of 21 I am an alumni of North Carolina Agriculture and Technical State University where I received my Bachelors of Science in Animal Science. I have had a good idea of what I have wanted to do with my life since I could remember.
At the age of 18 I entered undergrad as a freshman with a mind full of possibilities in the field of animal science. Throughout my three years in undergrad, I was given multiple opportunities to seek out an exact research topic or area. Throughout my freshman and sophomore year I worked with beef cattle and then switched to swine my junior year. I was given the opportunity to work on improving the population of Berkshire's on the farm by observing the growth performance and back fat of the offspring. My undergraduate let me focus more on the research I wanted to do as a graduate student.
I have three main reserach ideas: 1) cryopreservation, 2) estrus synchronization, and 3) gilt management. In the end I would like to improve ways of increasing populations for animal production. I chose to participate in the SPI program so I would be able to start my research early under advisement of my research advisor. I am here to improve and gain new techniques for the fall.
Sweet Dreams,
Kendra Esparza-Harris
That sounds interesting. Even though I don't quite understand your main ideas, it makes me wonder what applications would it have. Is it for preserving endengered species or for consumption? Or are there other reasons for wanting to increase animal populations? I look forward to hearing more about your topic!
