Late Arrival..But I Am Here Now!

Greeting,

My name is Marielisbet "Lisa" Perez and as many of you arrived last week, I just arrived this Tuesday from San Jose, California. I am from the north side of California, better know as Silicon Valley (home of Google/EBay). I did not have the privilege of meeting any of you at the orientation, but I look forward to meeting and talking with you.

Last Thursday, I had the privilege of seeing my first born graduate from high school. It was a privilege for me to see Jose accomplish so much in his life and grow into a young strong individual. I also have a 12 year old daughter, Savannah, who will be moving here in August. Savannah is nervous and hesitant about moving away from her home and friends. One of my personal goals this summer is to familiarize myself with Urbana-Champaign and make the transition a little easier for her. If anybody has any living in site, I would appreciate it.

My goal for the summer is to meet as many people as I can. Even though I may seem shy and quiet at times, I am a people person and I enjoy talking and hanging out. If anybody ever needs to talk. vent, or hang out, I would enjoy your company. Feel free to reach out.

I am EPOL and I am proud to be pursuing my doctoral degree in the Education Policy, Organization and Leadership (EPOL) program. I look forward to connecting with my cohort and meeting faculty. My research interest is youth, education equity, and low-income communities. I am specifically interested in learning more about youth culture barriers and academic struggles.

Best,

Marielisbet

  1. Hi Lisa, I'm glad you're joining us. I hope you and your family transition here nicely. Although, I am not in an Education program, I do find the topic of education equity with regards to low-income communities very important. There's so much that needs to change and improve. Hopefully you and the other EPOL students will do great things while on campus and when you graduate. Best wishes.
