Intoduction

Hello SPI Fellows!

I am Mayra Lopez and I'm in the Animal Sciences Master's Program at the U of I. During the ice breaker in orientation I was talking to John and one of the first things he said was, "you really love animals" and that pretty much describes me. I love animals! I received my B.S. in Animal Sciences here at the U of I. During the last few years I interned at the Champaign County Humane Society, worked at Brookfield Zoo and at a dog daycare, volunteer at an animal hospital, PAWS Chicago, and with the Humane Society of the United States. Also as an undergrad I participated in the McNair Scholars Program and worked with the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) to research the correlation between cat coat color and their personalities.

I'm interested in animal behavior and I hope to eventually obtain a Ph.D. in Animal Behavior. My research will revolve around sow housing, in particular how to improve housing while maintaining high production and the well being of sows. I know this is slightly different from what I have done but I am excited to start working on my research. If you guys have any questions feel free to ask.

On another note, I know many of you brought your dogs with you and I would love to meet them. I just adopted a dog from PAWS and I'm still working in training her so if any of you have any suggestions please let me know!

Looking forward to getting to know you all,

Mayra Lopez
