Introduction: Sasha Fleming-Fisher

Despite growing up in the inner-city of South Central Los Angeles and being a first generation college student, I was able to persevere through a disadvantaged education system and low-income background. My perseverance continues to be the result of social experiences, extracurricular activities, and an upbringing that has equipped me with the insight to rebuild and improve the education system. All of this has prepared me to be an influential school leader. Therefore, I am seeking a Master’s and Doctoral degree in Education Administration and Leadership to share my success with education, empower school systems and to create a sense of urgency that every child should be granted an equal opportunity to receive a quality education. I want to develop young minds and increase their academic and creative abilities. Most importantly, it is my intention to create and implement innovative programs that expand educational opportunities and increase academic outcomes for our children.

I currently hold a Bachelor’s of Arts in Mass Communication and Journalism from California State University, Fresno. In pursuit of a Doctoral degree, my career aspirations and contributions are to develop and lead programs that seek to fundamentally challenge children. It is my desire to motivate students to think about higher education at an early age, create support systems, and encourage reciprocal learning. Specifically, I intend to contribute to the strides and progress in public education that will nurture youth to become deeply engaged and imbued in education through transforming and improving schools towards better performance. I am absolutely confident my passion for educational equality will fuel my career aspirations and contributions.

As a Summer Pre-Doctoral Institute Fellow, I am confident that the program will help me in my transition into higher education, will take my understanding of graduate school to a whole new level and will help me overcome adversity, adjust to a new place, and most importantly fuel my drive for success. I do believe this summer Pre-Doctoral Institute will be beneficial to me throughout my graduate studies and will equip me with the tools I need to succeed.  During my time in SPI I want to research the affects on low income communities and education. I also look forward in making strong connections with my fellow SPI cohort.

Thanks,

Sasha

  2. Sasha,

Congratulations on being able to rise above the common setbacks of most underrepresented groups. I am really moved by your ambitions. I think that it is great that your determined to assist young minds and encourage the pursuit of a college education. I see that your experiences seem to be the fuel to your fire. Being able to relate to those that you intend to help will definitely be encouragement to them also. I too am interested in hearing what type of programs you plan to initiate in order to satisfy your goals. Hope to talk to you soon.

  3. Sasha,

I'm glad to read that you want to get young students to think about higher education. I grew up in a low-income Chicago neighborhood and there are not a lot of expectations for young people to attend college. Many of them are satisfied with a high school diploma in part because there are not many people with a higher education living in the community. It's great that you want to help public schools to improve this.
