Blogger Assignment 1: Introductions

Hello Everybody,

My name is Robert Arias. I'm from Chicago and recently graduated from DePaul University earning a B.S. in Marketing. Currently my research interests focus on the consumption of low-income consumers. This summer I am investigating the interaction between psychological states of power and financial resource levels with Dr. Tiffany White. A vast amount of the resource literature has linked conspicuous consumption with low-income consumers. Recently, consumer research has linked the desire for high-status products with the psychological state of powerlessness. We hope to connect these two bodies of literature proposing that low-economic states increase the likelihood of poor consumers feeling powerless, consequently increasing their desire for high-status products they may not be able to afford. I hope my research will be able to contribute to financial literacy programs and assist the economic status of low-income consumers.

Looking forward to getting to know all of you!

Robert

  1. Dear Robert,

As a person who has helped tutor low income populations I can identify with your research topics. Also, by residing in New Orleans for the last couple of years where the literacy rate is probably one of the worst in the country I am very interested in your results from your summer research!

    Bests,

    A.Terry

  2. Your research topic is very interesting. From what I've seen, low-income people around the world buy pirate designer objects, and some spend their paychecks on the real things. Advertisements have a lot to do with the psychological aspect of this phenomenon. I'd love to see your final paper.
